The Impact of Green Roofs

Green roofs—also known as living roofs—are natural rooftop systems that soak up rain, reduce heat, and clean the air. At Groundwork, we see them as a practical way to tackle climate challenges and bring functional green space to dense, urban neighborhoods.

Groundwork Ohio River Valley – Oyler School Green Roof

In the Lower Price Hill neighborhood of Cincinnati, OH, Groundwork Ohio River Valley partnered with Oyler School to transform a rooftop into a living, green space. Designed with community input, the green roof helps manage stormwater, cools the building, and doubles as an outdoor classroom—giving students hands-on experience with climate solutions and building local resilience.

Project Goal: Manage stormwater, reduce heat, provide education for students
Project size: 5,000 square ft

Annual Benefits:

  • 86,000 gallons of stormwater absorbed
  • 6.5 pounds of air pollution removed
  • Green roof is 22°F cooler than adjacent roof and 73°F cooler than nearby asphalt
  • $6,710/year in educational, environmental, and energy benefits
  • ROI: $1.25 per $1 invested
