Portland’s Willamette River, between the Broadway Bridge and the river’s mouth ,was designated as an EPA Superfund site in 2000. Groundwork Portland helped found and continues to support the Portland Harbor Community Coalition, a community-based group advocating for people of color, low-income communities, and others left out of the planning process.
Back in 1994, the site of the current Emerson Street Garden was an empty lot polluted with lead. Today, after a lengthy community effort led and organized by Groundwork Portland and the Oregon Sustainable Agriculture Land Trust, this former brownfield is a thriving community garden and green space for the people of Northeast Portland. The remediation was finished in the summer of 2015 and is ready for its first organic growing season in 2016!
